After the Night Rain, a book of contemporary haiku by James G. Brueggemann, explores and celebrates the concept of place. Each of the haiku arises from identity with a location or circumstance which resonates emotionally with the reader through recall of parallel experiences. "Place" is explored through life in Duluth, Minnesota, a narrow strip of city cladding the hill between the southern edge of boreal forest and the northern shore of Lake Superior's western end. It is evoked as well in haiku from a lake cabin in Wisconsin's north woods, where the loudest sound at night may be the lonely yodel of a loon. "Place" is the root of haiku located in hospital work, in travel, even the "place" of being a grandparent. It becomes the framework for haiku celebrating the community and geography of South Carolina's lowcountry. Nearly two hundred haiku are presented in sections headed by original illustrations inspired by one of the haiku in that section. The sequenced rhythm of two to four haiku per page draws the reader into a tapestry created by the poems in each section. Kaori Mitsushima created all of the interior illustrations and cover art, also drawn from a haiku in the book. Readers will discover these haiku to have a capacity to surface the richness of their own emotions and experiences. Even those previously unacquainted with haiku will find in these accessible little poems enduring images to carry with them through the day., After the Night Rain, a book of contemporary haiku, celebrates the concept of place, explored through personal experiences in Duluth, Minnesota; a cabin in Wisconsin's north woods; South Carolina's Lowcountry; hospitals; travel; even the "place" of being a grandparent.
